The power of the spoken word is undeniable. Oratory is a powerful ally of the written word because a great public speech is a potent means of communication. It can persuade, move, convince, agitate, enlighten and last but not least manipulate. History is full of examples of great orators whose fantastic speeches appealed to the masses. Bill Clinton is one of the best contemporary public speakers, who can remind us of the challenge in delivering a truly great speech. ‘You measure the impact of your words,’ he says, ‘not on the beauty or the emotion of the moment but on whether you change not only the way people think, but the way they feel’.
