Simply put, ethics involves learning what is right or wrong, and then doing the right thing. Taken at face value this definition may seem short and simple but if you stop reading and think about it for a while, you will soon notice that it does not explain much. You will soon notice that the definition does not answer any questions you might have, quite the contrary; numerous questions arise. How do we know what is right or what is wrong? Where and how can we learn this? Is it possible to learn this? Who can we ask for guidance? These questions could go on and on and on. No wonder philosophers have been discussing ethics for at least 2500 years, since the time of Socrates and Plato. Those who venture to study their works can decide if the philosophers have come up with any satisfactory answers or if they have made things even more complicated. However, they definitely make us realise how important addressing the issues related to ethics is. People have not changed significantly in the many years since the ancient philosophers walked the Earth. The rules of conduct and explanations of virtue and goodness that they propose can all help modern man attain a fuller and more satisfying understanding of his responsibilities as a member of society and the purpose of his existence.
