Rational Choice in Practice

At first glance, the Theory of Rational Choice can seem to be a bit confusing. That is why applying the theory to a real case study is necessary in order to understand how it works in practice and why it might become a useful tool for taking rational decisions.

Carmen’s Job

Carmen has just graduated from university and is looking for a job. She has been sending her cv and going to interviews for a few weeks and suddenly, she learns about an attractive vacancy in New York City, at Best Finance Bank. She believes it is exactly the right job for her. During the interview she is able to prove that she has all the right skills, and the company wants to hire her. Unfortunately, shortly after the interview, there is a global credit freeze, and the firm, expecting redundancies, stops hiring. They contact Carmen and say that they are very sorry but they just cannot offer her the job right now. Meanwhile, she receives another offer but is not sure if she wants it. Her friends are bragging about their good jobs and keep asking if she has been offered a position somewhere. Her parents are calling her to say that she needs to find a job soon because it is high time she became financially independent. As a result the pressure is building up, and finally Carmen gives in and takes a job at a consulting firm in Cleveland. It is not what she has been dreaming of but at last, she would be able to pay the bills with her own money. A few weeks later, she gets a phone call from the bank in New York saying that the situation has changed and they are hiring now. They ask Carmen to come to New York as soon as possible to sign the contract and start her dream job.
