Teoria racjonalnego wyboru jest jednym z narzędzi wspomagających rozwiązywanie dylematów etycznych. Odpowiedź na pytanie o to, czym jest racjonalność, nie jest jednakże ani oczywista, ani jednoznaczna. Pojęcie to bowiem jest różnie postrzegane, tak jak różnie można określać, czym jest racjonalny wybór. Najprościej odwołać się jednak można do opinii głoszącej, że chodzi tu o wybór najbardziej skutecznego środka do realizacji wcześniej określonych celów.

It Is All About Making a Rational Choice
In business ethics there is a framework for analyzing an ethical issue that is based on the idea that ethical choice is a rational choice and a logical choice. Rational does not necessarily mean rational self-interest. Rational choice is a broader idea than that. The job of ethics is to reach a rational consensus on how we should live together in a harmonious way. We have to agree on the ground rules to have anything done. We need some sort of prior agreement. One might wonder why we do not just take a vote on how to do things. It is an option, but still, first we need to agree that if we take a vote, we are going to abide by its result. Then we need to decide what counts as majority vote. Is it 51% or is it 60%. We always need some prior understanding on how we are going to live together. This is what ethics is for. Its role is to generate this rational consensus.
